Helsinki Accords - Signed by every European country (except for Albania) and the USA, the Helsinki Accords attempted to improve relations between the West and the communist bloc. The USA recognized Soviet control over Eastern Europe and promised not to interfere in the Soviet sphere of influence. Additionally, the Soviet Union agreed to protect the human rights of all people within Soviet territory. Helsinki Watch Groups, overseen by the United Nations, made sure that the Soviet Union respected this agreement. (Mackenzie)

SALT I - SALT I refers to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks from 1969-1972. The negotiations occurred between the United States and the Soviet Union during the era of détente, with the purpose of reducing tensions between the two countries and limiting armaments. SALT I led to the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, which aimed to end the arms race by limiting the use of ABM systems used to defend against nuclear weapons delivered by missiles. (Mackenzie)
